The Strike Zone is owned and operated by former Major Leaguer Carlos Rodriguez. Carlos grew up in Mexico City and is the son of Leo Rodriguez, who was also a professional baseball player. Here in the U.S. Leo excelled as far as "AAA" playing for the "Columbus Jets" affiliates of the Pittsburgh Pirates(1959-1960). He finished his playing career as a Hall of Famer in Mexico where he continued to coach at the professional level. Carlos' brother also played professional in the Mexican league for several years, currently he is a coach for one of the professional teams down there, Carlos' nephews(2) are currently playing professional baseball as well. Both dad and brother inspired and helped Carlos become a better player since his early years.
Carlos signed a minor league contract with the New York Yankees as a teenager. After 4 seasons playing in the minor leagues, Carlos was promoted to New York. After spending 7 years in the Yankee organization and with Derek Jeter behind him in the minors, Carlos decided in 1994 to signed a free agent contract with the Boston Red Sox. While playing for them his performance earned him the Boston Red Sox's Rookie of the Year Award, as voted by the Boston area sports writers. In the off season, Carlos had rotator cuff surgery on his right shoulder which required him to miss the first half of the 1995 season. He rejoined the Red Sox and played in the American League Championship series against the Cleveland Indians. After the conclusion of the season, Carlos again required an additional rotator cuff surgery. (He has had a total of six surgeries.) Once the Red Sox realized it would be very difficult for Carlos to return as a player they started training him, so they could transition him into the role of a coach. During this time, he gained extensive knowledge of the game in all areas. After three years of lenghty rehabilitation, his arm felt better; however, he could no longer play short-stop. He knew he had a job as a coach; however, he still had a desire to play, but he could not latch on with the Red Sox or any other major league team. Rather than return to the minors in the United States, Carlos followed his father's example and played second base for four seasons in the Mexican League. While playing in Mexico in 2003, he was chosen to represent his country in the Pan-American games in which they were awarded the bronze medal. Once his playing career ended, Carlos wanted to pursue his dream of teaching young boys and girls how to play the game that he knows and loves.
